Chapter 14

1089 A.D.

NADIR was thrilled he and Cyrus were once more showing their love. The weeks apart, of fear and uncertainty, made their time now that much more precious. He savored the stolen moments, kisses, and touches even more than he ever had. There was still a lot for them to figure out, a lot to learn how to deal with, but Nadir now felt like he could find a way to do so. As long as he had Cyrus’s love.

One night before they were to be prepared for another evening in the Grand Hall, Nadir sat with Cyrus in the common room, talking about one of the masters. “I don’t know, Cyrus, it’s just…. I am caught between wanting to chase after the master you are with to….” He paused and blushed. “To beat him to a pulp for touching you, and just closing my eyes and pretending that you are simply somewhere else, not having sex with someone.”

Cyrus frowned. “I rather wish I could do that. All I want to do, all I seem able to do, is think about hurting the person touching you.” He reached up and brushed the back of his fingers over Nadir’s cheek. “I wish so much that you could belong only to me, that your body could be kept for me.” He glanced around the room, and, seeing that the few people around had their attention otherwise engaged, he turned back, leaned in, and kissed Nadir gently.

Nadir’s eyes slid closed, and he savored the feel of lips on his. When they broke apart, Nadir opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted.

“Cyrus, Nadir, if you could come with me, please.”

They jumped apart in surprise, neither having heard Salehi approach, and exchanged terrified looks before standing and following Salehi down the hall to his office. Nadir’s heart pounded in his chest as they stepped through the door and their master closed it behind them.

“Something has come to my attention, and I believe it’s time to talk to the two of you about it,” Salehi said.

Nadir felt butterflies in his stomach wake up to go with his pounding heart. He didn’t know what they were going to say. They’d been caught kissing. Could they pass it off as comfort? As friendship? Maybe, though Nadir wasn’t too sure of that. Salehi was a very astute man. Nadir bit his lip hard, trying to think. What could they say?

But Cyrus spoke for them. “Yes, uh, Salehi?” Cyrus asked, sounding about as nervous as Nadir felt.

Nadir braced himself for the answer, swallowing around a very dry throat.

Salehi considered each of them for a moment, then spoke again. “I will be direct. Are you in love?”

Cyrus glanced at Nadir, who was fidgeting horribly, giving things away, even before Cyrus opened his mouth to speak. Nadir cursed himself silently. He should have known he’d never be able to hide it. With a deep breath, Cyrus managed, “Yes, we are.” Then, to Nadir’s surprise, he took Nadir’s hand and held it tight.
